A week before
- Check the forecast, and plan for daylight. Short winter days mean an early start helps.
- Book the elevator and loading area if you live in an apartment or condo.
- Arrange for heat, power and internet to be on at the new place on moving day.
- Pack a warm “first night” box: blankets, kettle, chargers, medication, snacks.
The day before
- Shovel and salt every path from both doors to where the truck will park, including the driveway and steps.
- Clear snow from in front of the garage if items are coming from there.
- Lay old towels or cardboard inside each entrance for boots.
Protect what doesn’t like the cold
- Plants: wrap them and move them in your warm car, not the truck.
- Electronics: after a cold ride, let TVs and computers warm up to room temperature for a few hours before switching them on.
- Liquids: cleaning products and drinks can freeze and burst. Move them in your car or use them up first.
- Wood and glass: cold makes them more brittle, so extra padding matters. Our crew wraps every piece.
On moving day
- Keep the heat on at both homes, and close doors between rooms to hold the warmth in while doors are open.
- Have a place for the crew to wipe boots. We bring floor runners to protect your floors from snow and slush.
- On extreme cold days, plan a little extra time. Everything moves more slowly when it’s minus 30.
