Booking the elevator for a condo or apartment move

In most Edmonton condo and apartment buildings, the elevator decides how smoothly moving day goes. Here’s what to ask your building, and when.

Ask your building early

Contact your property manager, condo manager or building office one to two weeks before your move, and again for the building you’re moving into. Ask:

  • Do I need to book the elevator, and for which hours?
  • Are moves allowed on weekends or only on certain days?
  • Is there a move-in or move-out fee, or a refundable deposit?
  • Where can the moving truck park? Is there a loading dock or back door?
  • Do movers need to provide a certificate of insurance?
  • Will elevator pads be installed, or should the movers bring them?

Booking tips

  • Book a long enough window. A 1-bedroom usually needs about 3 to 4.5 hours in total. Ask for a slot that covers the whole move, not just loading.
  • Line up both buildings. Book the new building’s elevator for a time that leaves room for driving and any delays.
  • Get it in writing. Save the confirmation email or note the name of the person who booked it.

Tell your movers

Send your movers the booked times, the loading area, any building rules and the unit numbers. At Magpie Movers we put these on your work order and confirm them at our 48-hour check-in. We can also email our certificate of insurance straight to your building.

On moving day

  • Be there to meet building staff, or leave contact details with the front desk.
  • Keep hallways clear so the crew isn’t slowed down.
  • Do a quick walkthrough of hallways and the elevator afterward, so any deposit is returned.
